What is Proderm Technology
Proderm Technolog® is a patented technology featuring a skin foam formulation with both moisturising and barrier strengthening properties.
The barrier function of the skin is important for regulating the emission of water from the body and also for protecting against the passage of external substances (“gate keeper” function). The upper part of the skin’s barrier consists of 85% lipids, i.e. ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids, in the proportions 1:1:1, and 15% water. If the lipid content drops or its composition is altered water emission increases and environmental irritants can more easily penetrate the skin resulting in a dry and irritated skin.
The key to Proderm’s unique properties is its specific composition of a well balanced combination of lipophilic and hydrophilic components. Rapidly absorbed into the outer layer of the skin (horny layer) the Proderm foam forms a semi-permeable membrane with a lipophilic side that protects the skin from environmental irritating substances and a hydrophilic side that retains the water in the skin. Both effects contribute to an optimisation of the conditions for natural repair of the skin during which water is lost. Proderm’s specific mixture of free fatty acids strengthens the skin’s lipid composition leading to a reinforcement of the barrier function and a gradual increase in skin moisture whereas immediate moisturizing is ensured by the subtle combination of highly hydrophilic substances.
The specific features of Proderm foam makes it a very effective and compliant skincare product, better than regular greasy ointments and creams that either simply force moisturising substances into the skin or occlude its surface with oils.
How is “the sun mousse” with Proderm Technology® different from other sunscreens?
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse is different from other sunscreens because it uses Proderm Technology® to form a protective layer within the epidermis. This offers a number of benefits:
-
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse is effective against UVA and UVB radiation for up to six hours, making it two to three times more effective than conventional sunscreens.
-
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse is more resistant to water and towel drying than conventional sunscreens.
-
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse not only protects the skin from UVA and UVB radiation, but also against irritation from salt, chlorine, water, sand and wind burn.
-
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse is rapidly absorbed and does not leave a greasy residue on the skin which can stain clothes.
-
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse does not block the pores of the skin allowing normal vapour exchange with the environment.
What clinical research has been undertaken?
Proderm products are supported by 27 substantive clinical and case studies and 11 toxicological studies which confirm its safety and efficacy. In addition, the Inveresk Research Institute (now Charles River), one of Europe’s leading independent research centers has conducted 15 clinical studies to determine the effectiveness of the sun protection factors, the waterproof potential and the UVA and UVB ratio.
What does Proderm Sunscreen Mousse contain ?
Proderm Sunscreen Mousse consists of, in decreasing order of magnitude, a mixture of palmitic and stearic acid, propylene glycol, PVP, glycerol, polysorbate 20, triethanolamine, a small amount of dimethicone, preservative and 80% water. The Proderm formulation is composed of two main groups of substances: the lipophilic substances that repel water and penetrate into the intercellular space of the stratum corneum and the hydrophilic substances with high water affinity which are easily absorbed in the water-rich regions of the stratum corneum. Chemical sunscreens are also included to protect the skin against UVA and UVB radiation.
Palmitic and stearic acid are respectively 16 and 18 long carbon chains, which exist in solid form at room or body temperature. These fatty acids can be liquefied by heating to 60ºC, dissolving in alcohol (ester) or by emulsifying (saponification) with a basic ingredient. During emulsification, another structure is obtained and the ability to mix with other fats reduces. The patented Proderm Technology ®, which is the basis for the manufacture of Proderm, enables the fatty acids to remain in a non-emulsified liquid state at room temperature which provides the product with excellent miscibility and penetration properties.
Propylene glycol (alcohol) is very hygroscopic, i.e. it easily binds water molecules, and also a good organic solvent. It is commonly used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and in liquid pharmaceuticals. It has shown some antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a high molecular weight polymer used in the pharmaceutical industry as a film builder in the production of pills. Due to its molecular weight it is not absorbed in the skin.
Glycerin/glycerol (alcohol) is a moisturizer with equivalent properties to propylene glycol.
Polysorbate 20 is an oily liquid. It is a class of emulsifiers (surfactants) used in some pharmaceuticals and food preparation to stabilize emulsions and suspensions.
Triethanolamine (TEA) is a tertiary amine and a tri-alcohol. L ike other amines, triethanolamine acts as a weak base. This ingredient is used as a pH balancer in cosmetic preparations in a variety of different products - ranging from skin lotion, eye gels, moisturizers, shampoos, shaving foams etc. It reacts with free fatty acids to form ester salts (saponification) which are poorly miscible with other fats and poorly penetrated in the skin.
Dimethicone ( Polydimethylsiloxane PDMS), is the most widely used silicon-based organic polymer (oil), and is particularly known for its unusual rheological (or flow) properties. Due to its high molecular weight it remains in the outermost layer of the stratum corneum and provides the skin with a silky sensation.
Phenonip XB is a preservative consisting of a mixture of parabens for medical use: phenoxyethanol, methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, and propyl paraben.
